Question about single date item when exporting MARCXML

I am experimenting with exporting MARCXML from the resource records I create, with the hope that I can conform the data I input with catalogers' standards for MARC records. Most of the export looks okay--title maps to the 245 title, extent maps to 300 subfield a, etc. The problem I am seeing is with dates--If we are working with a single item, there is a conflict with the AT rules for these dates compared with the bibliographic format rules. For inclusive dates, AT requires that a beginning year and an ending year be entered, even though for an object there may be only one year. So, when the MARCXML is exported, the duplicate years both get put into the controlfield tag (008), and this goes against bib format standards because when there is a single date, it should only be entered once. [According to bib format standards, the only way the same date could be entered twice in the date fixed field (008) is if the bib level is collection or subunit.] Trying to get it to export correctly, I also tried entering the single date in only the date expression field, but when MARCXML is exported, the date only appears in the 245 $f, and not at all in the 008 field. Has anyone else had similar issues, and how have you solved it?

Annie, Thank you for

Annie,

Thank you for following up with me. The data after the export is not conforming to MARC because of the reasons stated in original message:

"When the MARCXML is exported, the duplicate years both get put into the controlfield tag (008), and this goes against bib format standards because when there is a single date, it should only be entered once. I hope this answers the question. I know it sounds pretty complicated, but I cannot think of any better way to state it.

Thank you,
Tanesa

Error with MARCXML export

Tanesa,

You have uncovered a bug with the MARCXML export, wch is not compliant with the AT export map. An AT bug report has been filed and you can see the details for this issue at https://jira.nyu.edu/jira/browse/ART-2365.

RE: single date item when exporting MARCXML

Hi,

Regarding the exporting of MARCXML and dates, if it's at the item level and the beginDate and endDate are the same, the export should work. Take a look at the data map for AT to MARCXML exports here (Located at the bottom of the page under 'Data maps', then 'Export maps (EAD, MARCXML, MODS, DC & METS) is an Excel spreadsheet with mappings).

Thank you for your help,

Thank you for your help, Annie and for the link to the data maps. The export to MARCXML is definitely working, but that is not really my concern. My problem is that the data after the export (specifically, the date in the fixed fields--008) is not conforming to MARC standards for the data. Maybe this is something that AT technicians can fix.

Thanks,
Tanesa

Hi, Tanesa, Can you describe

Hi, Tanesa,

Can you describe how it is not conforming to MARC?

Thanks,
