Error in initialization of database: "specified key was too long max key length is 1000 bytes"

I have a mysql database that is UTF-8 encoded. I get "specified key was too long max key length is 1000 bytes" in the middle of the maintenance program initialization of the database. I tried altering the database to latin1, but still get this error.

Please help :)
