initialize: sql error occured when checking if database is empty

I just installed AT and mySQL and am trying to get going. I immediately got this error message when attempting to initialize the database using the maintenance program:

"an sql error occured when checking if database is empty"

I am using the latest versions of AT, mySQL (5.1) and Java on a Win 2000 machine.

I created the database in mySQL using a simple command line, there are no users set up or anything else - just a blank database.

Everything is local, so these were my paameters in the AT maint prog Database Connection Information:

Connection URL: jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/DB_COLLECTIONS
Username: root
Password: [the root password set up during mySQL install]

I've followed the installation instructons to the letter, and I can't see where I've gone wrong.

Same problem - even on update 8

I installed update 8 (as my first install of AT) and am having the problem of "error ... when checking if database is empty". Now, I have other databases in my MySQL install already, and my Navicat doesn't allow me to have an additional catalog AFAIK. So I just added a database in the existing instance/catalog, and created users with appropriate permissions. I'll try giving the users access to everything as a test.

error

Thank you, Annie. No. 2: okay. I uninstalled the jdbc connector as well as mysql. I reinstalled mysql and tried everything again.

I must admit I don't understand what you mean by 1: "First, MySQL usually will not allow root user to connect over a network connection as the AT does." if mySQL is the backend database server for AT. What would you suggest be changed?

Maybe this could be better resolved via telephone?

Thanks again.

Upgrade to AT 2.0 update 8

Hi, Nancy,

Try downloading and install AT 2.0 update 8 (just released) which includes the latest database driver (related to inability to save/and or connect to mysql database we've been seeing lately)

initialize: sql error occured when checking if database is empty

I am having the same problem. Please post if anyone has found a solution.

Hi, Try initializing again

Hi,

Try initializing again with the following URL:

jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/DB_COLLECTIONS?characterEncoding=UTF8

Also, you can create a new blank database, making sure to select character set uft8-unicode.

Please let us know if one of these does not solve the problem.

Best wishes,
Annie

Still having an issue

I have the same problem during intilization I get ab sql error occurred when checking if database is empty. I tried to connect with the URL: jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/GLBTHS AND with jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/GLBTHS?characterEncoding=UTF8. I still got the error message.

Thanks,
Rebekah

A couple of possibilities:

A couple of possibilities: that there data already in the database or the login credentials are incorrect. The syntax listed in your message is correct. If neither scenario is likely, can you give us more information on how you proceeded?

You might want to create another new blank database with the character set 'uft8-unicode', then run the AT maintenance program (in the AT folder) to initialize the new database.

Initialization Error when checking to see if database is empty

This is what I have tried so far

In MYSQL via (DOS) command line
--Checked and rechecked users and root names, passwords and grants in mysql.
--Dropped database in mysql, then created another (with both combined and separate utf8 character commands) (I downloaded and installed mysql and the jdbc connector so there should not be other databases or tables in mysql.
Uninstalled and deleted Archivists Toolkit, downloaded again and reinstalled
Checked windows for mysql port 3306 proper and unchecked conifiguration
Checked Archivists Toolkit sytax.

Initialization Error when checking to see if database is empty

This what I have done:
Through MySQL Workbench 5.2:
- I checked the users and root names and made sure they had access.
- I created a database with the utf8 specifications and could not connect
- Checked the firewall settings and made that port (3306) an exception – still could not connect.
- I then deleted the database, and I created a new database and still could not connect.

Thanks,
Rebekah

Hi Rebekah and Nancy, A

Hi Rebekah and Nancy,

A couple of other things that could cause the error:

First, MySQL usually will not allow root user to connect over a network connection as the AT does. And second, you don't need installation of jdbc connector since the AT already ships with it.

Still having an issue

I uninstalled and reinstalled MySQL, and created a new database, as well as install the updated Toolkit and am still having a problem. I am not trying to connect over the network, the Toolkit and database is on the same machine.

Hi, Rebekah, Even if the

Hi, Rebekah,

Even if the Toolkit is running on the same machine as MySQL, it's still making a network connection.
Try creating a non root user and connect using that account instead of the root account which defaults to, thus not allowing connection through a network connection.

working!

Hi Annie,

There was something wrong with creating the database in the MySQL Workbench. I wasn't able to connect to the database I had created in the MYSQL Command Line Client - so I just created a database in the command line client and then I was able to connect and initialize the database. Not sure what happened - since the users I created in the Workbench seemed to work just fine. Thanks for all your help.

Rebekah
